North Battleford girl gets chance to sing with Shania Twain

A North Battleford youngster is still excited after having a once in a lifetime opportunity to sing on stage with Shania Twain during the Canadian country star’s recent concert in Saskatoon.

Mom Alesha Oborowsky said her daughter Adalynn was spotted in the audience and invited up on stage along with another girl to join Twain for a song during the artist’s Queen of Me Tour stop at the SaskTel Centre.

“That was my fifth time seeing Shania Twain,” she said. “That was her first [time]. I never got to meet [Twain], but Adalynn sure did…. [After the experience,] Adalynn was buzzing all weekend, telling grandma and grandpa, and everyone she met. It was great! I think she’ll remember it for a long time.”

Oborowsky took the five year old to the show May 12 as a Mother’s Day weekend treat, knowing her daughter is a big fan of Twain’s.

“It was a running joke [at home]. She [Adalynn] would tell me and [her dad] Albert that ‘one day she wants to sing with that Shania lady’…,” Oborowsky said. “This was months before the show even came about in Saskatoon. And well, she got a surprise that night. Everyone said they were thinking it was planned. But it was actually totally random. It was cool how she talked about that [wish] for months on end [beforehand], and it came true.”

Adalynn, who was in the audience with her mother at the show, held up her sign that said: “My First Concert,” with the hope that Twain would see it, and she did.

In addition to being selected to sing on stage with Twain, Adalynn was given a guitar pick from Twain’s sound crew, and a drum stick from the drummer in Twain’s band that night.

“It was her first concert,” Oborowsky said. “I was a little hesitant in taking her because I didn’t know how she would [do]. She did pretty good, and obviously had a surprise of the night.”

Adalynn wore a fun wide-brimmed black hat to the show to get in the country spirit.

“She picked out what she wanted to wear,” Oborowsky said. “I had this hat in her closet and she told me she wanted to wear it that night. I said: ‘Alright, as long as it fits. Sure.'”

Oborowsky noted when Twain invited Adalynn and another girl in the audience to join her for a song on stage, Twain turned to Adalynn to ask her what her favourite song of Twain’s is.

“Adalynn said: ‘Let’s go, girls,'” Oborowsky said, of the song’s popular intro words.

Then, the two girls sang the hit “Man, I feel like a woman” with the star.

“Shania started part of the song and let each one of the girls have a chance at singing a couple of verses of it,” Oborowsky said. “Then, the crowd cheered, and chimed in too, singing along. It was pretty cool.”

Oborowsky added she doesn’t believe Adalynn really knew at first how special it was to get a chance to sing with Twain, because when she was on stage she wasn’t nervous. She was just “singing and having fun.”

“I don’t think it set in for her [Adalynn] – like, oh, my gosh, mommy I just was on stage,” Oborowsky said. “Other than me, I was still in shock, thinking – oh my goodness. She [Adalynn] was stopped by a lot of people when we were leaving the show who were telling her she did a great job!”

After Adalynn sang with Shania and returned to her seat, Oborowsky said, Adalynn turned to her and said: “Mommy, after the concert I want to go for pancakes.”
