Mineral sales in Sask. hits $19.4B in 2022

Last year was a record year for Saskatchewan when it came to mineral sales.

According to the province, over $19.4 billion was raised in 2022, mainly due to higher prices and global demand.

They stated around 136,000 ounces of gold was extracted from the Seabee mine in northern Saskatchewan, while production and value for potash, which is primarily used in fertilizers, saw record highs in an attempt to alleviate global food insecurity concerns.

The province also credited the reopening of the McArthur River mine in northern Saskatchewan for helping drive up uranium production.

“These numbers show what a powerhouse Saskatchewan has become at supplying the world with minerals,” said Jim Reiter, Saskatchewan’s Energy and Resources Minister. “The success of our natural resource sector directly influences our quality of life in Saskatchewan by providing jobs and revenue for social services and infrastructure, like highways, hospitals, and schools.”

Meanwhile, the province believes the sector should continue to grow thanks to its ‘Securing the Future: Saskatchewan’s Critical Minerals Strategy’ which ultimately aims to increase overall production and spending.
