Town encourages drivers to slow down around Riverbend Crescent

May 17, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The Town of Battleford is urging drivers to watch their speeds on the residential streets in the community.

Councillor David George raised concerns about a stretch of road from Second Avenue West to Fifth Avenue West, on Riverbend Crescent, during this week’s council meeting.

“We’re having a heck of a time down at Riverbend… It’s becoming a speed hazard,” he said.

George noted some residents proposed the idea of putting in speed bumps at this location to slow speeding drivers down.

“They put stop signs down at the end there, but that doesn’t stop anybody whose going [about] 80 kilometres an hour, from Fifth to Second [Avenues]…,” he said.

Mayor Ames Leslie asked drivers to slow down for everyone’s safety.

“It’s hard to say how fast they are going without a radar detector. Sometimes speed can be deceiving. But we definitely do know there is an increased amount of speeding in some of our residential streets,” he said following the meeting. “We do ask people to take caution, and slow down. You just never know what is going to come bouncing out from a driveway, from behind a bush or whatever it may be.”

The mayor added he will reach out to the RCMP to ask them to have more presence around the streets Councillor George has mentioned that are seeing increased speeds, and “we’ll see if we can nip it.”
