Community comes out to support McHappy Day

May 10, 2023 | 2:05 PM

UPDATE: The McDonald’s Restaurants in North Battleford, Meadow Lake and Kindersley in total raised about $25,000 for the McHappy Day campaign to support Ronald McDonald House Charities in Saskatchewan.

The amount also includes daily donations from customers from these four McDonald’s restaurants from April 11 to McHappy Day on May 10. McDonald’s North Battleford Railway Avenue E. restaurant manager Alex Maga said: “Every year, we are trying to top up what we have done the previous year. I think, year after year, we are doing so. We can see it from the smile of the guests coming in and out of the restaurant.”

Original Story

McDonald’s locations in North Battleford and across the country are celebrating McHappy Day today.

Proceeds from sales May 10 will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada.

Youngster Noah Babchuk, from North Battleford, is the local McHappy Day Ambassador for Ronald McDonald House, which offers a safe and comforting place for families caring for their sick child receiving medical care in Saskatchewan.

The six-year-old was selling special McHappy Day socks at the McDonald’s Territorial Drive location for the fundraiser.

Soon after Noah was born, he was diagnosed with asthma and laryngomalacia, so he has been in and out of the hospital a lot. Having Ronald McDonald House available to his family has been a great help whenever they are in Saskatoon for Noah’s medical stays.

“When [Noah] was born, he just got sick and became immunocompromised. We had a lot of trouble figuring out what exactly was his diagnosis,” his mom, Anna Babchuk, said. “We spent 17 days in the Ronald McDonald House, and counting, since 2017. The Ronald McDonald House gives you a place to sleep; it gives you a sense of family; it gives you anything essentially that you need to get through a tough time of having a sick child.”

Babchuk is glad to support McHappy Day to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Radio hosts from CJNB, The Rock and Q98 volunteered helping make meals and take orders during the day at McDonald’s in North Battleford, as well as Battlefords RCMP, WPD Ambulance staff, and a number of other local organizations and businesses.

Sharon Taylor who owns all the North Battleford McDonald’s Restaurant locations as well as sites in Meadow Lake and Kindersley is always excited about the McHappy Day fundraiser.

“It’s one of the best days out of the year. We get to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon,” she said. “We’re so blessed we are able to do this. All proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon.”

McDonalds Restaurants throughout Canada are raising money for their charity of choice as well as the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

“We choose to give all of it [funds raised] to Ronald McDonald House, [from restaurants in North Battleford, Meadow Lake and Kindersley],” Taylor said.

93.3 The Rock host Tyler Janzen was thrilled to see such a good turnout to get behind the fundraiser, as well as all the people who stepped up to lend a hand, helping make meals with McDonald’s staff.

“The whole community came out to volunteer,” he said. “It’s a really good support.”
