Community sends off North Stars to Centennial Cup

North Stars fans lined the streets of North Battleford Monday morning, to cheer on the team as they set off on their journey to Portage, MB., to compete for a National Championship May 11-21 at the 2023 Centennial Cup.

The North Stars’ Send-Off saw the team bus, escorted by local emergency services vehicles, drive through the downtown on their way out of the city, leaving the Access Communications Centre at 9 a.m., heading down 19^th Avenue, then 101 Street, and onto Railway Ave. E. onto Highway 16.

Hometown defenceman, Zane Florence said it was special to see so many out to wish the team well on their way to nationals.

“It’s pretty awesome to see the community out supporting us, and they seem just as excited as us so it’s really cool to see,” Florence said with a smile. “Their support just brings us to another level, so we definitely appreciate it.”

The North Stars will travel as far as Brandon, MB., Monday, where they will spend the night prior to finishing their journey to Portage Tuesday, to complete the eight-and-a-half-hour trek from North Battleford.

The North Stars will open their Centennial Cup schedule with the first game of the tournament Thursday morning against the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) champion, Kam River Fighting Walleye at 10 a.m. Saskatchewan time.

The Stars will play four games through the round robin, prior to the start of the playoff rounds, with each available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin 30 minutes prior to puck drop each game on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
