Due to Fires

Do Not Consume water advisory issued for Saulteaux First Nation

May 5, 2023 | 1:45 PM

First Nations and Inuit Health has issued a Do Not Consume water advisory for those in the Saulteaux community and surrounding area.

Due to the large volume of water being used fighting wildfires near Saulteaux First Nation, located 43 kilometers north of North Battleford, and the difficulties at the Water Treatment Plant trying to supply enough water to fight those fires, a Do Not Consume Water Advisory is issued for those on the Saulteaux Community Water Distribution System.

A release by First Nations and Inuit Health said to maintain an adequate amount of water in the reservoir, the Water Treatment Plant has been forced to suspend the treatment process to be able to provide enough water to maintain fire-fighting capabilities.

Due to the lack of treatment, chemicals normally removed by the treatment process will make the water unsafe to drink.

It goes on to say, “People should be advised to obtain their water for drinking, food preparation, and brushing of teeth from another safe source such as bottled water for the time being” adding that the advisory will remain in place until the following:

1. The fire danger is over and the Water Treatment Plant has flushed the reservoir and has fully implemented the treatment process again

2. The distribution lines have been flushed

3. Two sets of samples, taken at least 24 hours apart, show there is no bacteriological contamination and at least 0.2 mg/L of free chlorine residual throughout the system.

Saulteaux First Nation shared the advisory in a Facebook post, adding Friday morning they were working on getting water to the Community Hall for those in need.
