North Stars Wurst commits to College of St. Scholastica

Battlefords North Stars forward Emmett Wurst is headed back to the State of Hockey this fall, for the next chapter in his career, at the post-secondary level.

The native of Edina, MN., USA has announced his commitment to The College of St. Scholastica, located in Duluth, MN., for the fall of 2023.

Wurst said he couldn’t be happier to continue his career at the collegiate level next season, with a chance to play close to home where family and friends can come out to games.

“I’m obviously very excited to get that commitment locked up and it’s close to home so my parents will be able to come watch me which was a big deal to me,” he said with a smile. “I’m looking forward to it, and excited to get that rolling.”

As a 20-year-old on the North Stars this season, Wurst played an integral role in the Battlefords’ championship run. Named an assistant captain at the start of the year in just his second season with the team, Wurst went on to score 15 points in 46 games, while being one of the Stars’ top faceoff men and a key piece of the penalty kill.

In fact, it was Wurst that the team put out on the ice for the final faceoff of the playoffs, with just seconds to go in the SJHL championship-clinching Game 4 in Flin Flon, to bring home the league title.

Head coach of the North Stars Brayden Klimosko said in Wurst, the Scholastica program are getting ‘a character guy’ whose impact goes well beyond the raw stats.

“He’s one of those guys who just bought into anything that was asked of him, and you can never have enough of those guys, so I give him a lot of respect for that,” Klimosko said.

“It’s not easy as a 20-year-old sometimes to not be in every game, and he was a bit unlucky with some injuries, but he did a lot of those little things right: blocking shots, he’d drop the gloves if needed, winning faceoffs, and was really good defensively; so I’m looking forward to seeing him pursue his dreams of getting a scholarship and obviously really happy for him.”

Wurst joins a successful St. Scholastica College program that finished atop the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings this season with a 13-1-2 MIAC record, going 17-7-3 overall this year, making it to the MIAC championship game.
