Over 30 lose home after multiplex fire on Mosquito First Nation

Apr 25, 2023 | 11:42 AM

Thirty-one people on the Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation have lost their homes after a fire.

The blaze broke out in an eight-room multiplex Monday afternoon and eventually turned into a grassfire. Seven of the rooms were housing families with children, while the other was being used by a single person.

Chief Tanya Stone told battlefordsNOW crews were able to put the fire out before it damaged any other properties.

“It rained (Monday) night and we had our volunteer fire crew out until about midnight putting out hot spots.”

The leadership of Mosquito First Nation held an emergency meeting Monday night where they discussed the next steps with representatives from Indigenous Services Canada, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN), and the Battleford Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC).

They plan on meeting with their displaced members Tuesday afternoon where they’re expected to bring up possible housing options.

“They were in hotel rooms (last night) that Red Cross provided for the next three days,” added Stone.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown and remains under investigation.
