Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill presented Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medals to two long-serving community leaders Thursday.

Nicole Combres, executive director of BGC Battlefords, formerly known as the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club, and local businessman Scott Campbell, a strong community supporter and philanthropist, were both recognized in the ceremony.

Campbell said he and his wife Donna have always had a strong commitment to the Battlefords, and he is touched by this gesture from the community.

“We appreciate the award, and we’re so grateful to our community for the support over the years,” he said. “We feel the least we can do is give back. That’s been our philosophy all the time we’ve been in business here.”

Combres, who has been with BGC Battlefords for almost eight years, also appreciated being recognized for her service.

“I feel incredibly privileged and honoured to work for an organization that is impacting thousands of kids around the Battlefords,” she said. “I feel really privileged to work with the team that we have here. I’m grateful for this honour, receiving this medal.”

Cockrill said the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medals are all about recognizing people in the community who have made a difference in their work and through giving back.

“I’m privileged to be able to present two medals today to Scott Campbell and Nicole Combres, recognizing the impact they’ve had in our community,” he said.

Cockrill said Campbell has run successful businesses for many years in the Battlefords. He not only has been successful in the business world, but also “contributed so much to different [initiatives] in the community— whether it’s here at BGC Battlefords or whether it’s at the Field House [NationsWEST Field House]. So, it’s great to see that.”

Campbell donated $150,000 towards the naming rights to the court side in the Field House when it was built.

On Combres’ contributions, Cockrill said she and her team, through the work that they do every day at BGC Battlefords, help make “the lives of our kids better each and every single day.”

“I really appreciate Nicole’s leadership and vision here at BGC Battlefords.” Cockrill said.
