City and BIRC offer fun activities to celebrate Easter

Families looking for something fun to do to celebrate Easter will want to look into the City of North Battleford’s and the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre’s (BIRC) events coming up.

The City of North Battleford plans to hold its Easter “Eggstravaganza” celebration, with two egg scavenger hunts for kids to take part in during the holidays.

All the fun takes place Saturday, April 8 – from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the NationsWEST Field House, and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Aquatic Centre. Participants need to bring their swimsuits. Admission to the pool is free during this time.

“It’s essentially a large Easter egg hunt,” InnovationPlex manager Michelle Horncastle said. “It’s a great opportunity to get families out and have a bit of fun to celebrate Easter in the community.”

Kids will search the Field House facility or the pool deck to try to find the hidden eggs to win some prizes. Those who find the golden eggs will win special larger prizes.

Participants must make sure to arrive a little earlier than the start times to take part in the two egg hunt events.

Organizers also plan some fun activities for kids to get involved in after the egg scavenger hunts are done.

Then, coming up Wednesday, April 12, the BIRC is organizing a free Easter event, called “Happy Easter: Let’s Celebrate Together,” complete with an Easter egg-shell painting workshop.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at a local participating church. People must sign up in advance by calling 306-446-0622.

The activity is aimed for children, but parents can attend also to help the kids.

“They are going to be doing egg painting the old-fashioned way,” BIRC executive director Annette McGovern said. “They are going to dye the eggs. We’ll see how artistic they get. They’ll be using onion skins, the natural [way] they used to dye eggs years ago.”

The BIRC’s Ukrainian staff will help organize this event.

McGovern said it will be interesting to see how the traditional process of dyeing eggs is done.

“It’s great to get back to the old way of doing things,” she said.

The event will be held the week after Easter as the Immigration Resource Centre will be closed during the holidays.

This activity is funded with support from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Participants will also prepare a Ukrainian dish, an Easter recipe of something tasty to eat, for everyone to take home afterwards.

The afternoon will also include a screening of a movie that focuses on the meaning of Easter and the theme of new beginnings.

Jerry Ondos, BIRC’s Community Connections coordinator, said it should be a great day of activities.

“We encourage immigrant people to join mostly, but we are open for everybody,” he said. “To be part of this event, [families] have to call us and register, because there are limited spots [available]. We encourage people to celebrate with this special event.”
