A man was arrested following an incident involving a weapon near Discovery Co-op Mall on Territorial Drive in North Battleford.

According to Battlefords RCMP, officers received a report of an armed man at a business on Territorial Drive in North Battleford at about noon on March 31.

Police responded immediately but could not find him at the location.

No injuries were reported to police.

Police then began proactively patrolling the area and noticed the man walking on 101 Street shortly later. When officers approached him and told him he was under arrest, the man ran away. But he was arrested after a brief foot chase.

The man allegedly assaulted a police officer during the arrest. The officer was not seriously injured. Police seized a knife they found after investigating.

Darwin Andrew, 39, from North Battleford, is facing charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; carrying a concealed weapon; resisting and obstructing a peace officer; disturbing the peace; and assault on a police officer.

He was scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.

Discovery Co-op released a statement later confirming the incident happened outside the Discovery Co-op Mall.

They said as a result the facility was quickly and quietly evacuated while police investigated.

The Co-op said that the suspect did not enter the mall building, and had left the area at the time.

“Your safety and the safety of our team are of the utmost importance to Discovery Co-op, so we want to let you know what happened,” the statement said.
