Kenny Moccasin has once again been elected as chief of Saulteaux First Nation.

The results of the elections for chief and council were announced Saturday.

Moccasin won the race with 340 votes, followed by three other candidates – Jordan Gopher who picked up 136 votes, Michael Houle-Night 28, and Robert Camplin trailing with 14 votes.

“I’ve been in leadership for quite some time, since 2007,” Moccasin said. “There’s lots of work to be done. It was a landslide victory. I thank the Elders of the community and all the membership for re-electing me as chief.”

Five candidates of 14 in the running were declared the winners in the race for the councillor positions: Rebecca Gopher (incumbent) with 262 votes, Curtis Poitras 257, Gabriel Moccasin (incumbent) 256 votes, Ricky Moccasin 233, and Don Curtis Night 221 votes.

Kenny Moccasin was first elected chief in 2009 and has been in the position intermittently over the years. He has been chief nine years in total.

Moccasin said he is eager to focus on a number of capital projects the First Nation is trying to get off the ground.

“I’m looking forward to [working on] a new school, a new fire hall, a new subdivision, and bringing in a lot of homes for the community [that are] much needed,” he said. “I look forward to working with the new leadership, as I have in the past. It takes teamwork to move the community forward, with the support of the Elders.”

Moccasin said there are also some specific claims coming forward for the community. He also wants the team to focus on purchasing more land, and furthering economic development for the First Nation.
