N.B. Legion accepting applications for Veterans’ Banner program

North Battleford Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 70 is once again starting to receive applications for its “Honour Our Veterans” banner program.

The Legion will accept 40 applications on a first come, first served basis, from March 15 to Aug. 31, from families wishing to sponsor a banner to remember a loved one who served the country. The cost of a banner is $250.

Banner application forms are available at the Legion at 1352-100 Street in North Battleford, or by contacting the branch by email at rcl.70@sasktel.net.

Legion secretary Louise Oster organizes the Veterans’ Banner program.

“When they [families] come for the application, there is a form to fill out with all the veteran’s information on it,” she said. “Then, they write a little biography. They also receive a [2023 Veterans Banner program] booklet with the purchase of a banner.”

Banners will be displayed along 100 Street from mid-October to mid-November, to coincide with the Remembrance Day and Veterans’ Week period.

This is the fourth year the program has been running in North Battleford.

The Legion is proud to continue the initiative, to highlight many local veterans’ efforts and dedication to the Canadian Forces over the years.

“The veterans have done so much for our country,” Oster said. “We would like to honour them that way.”

Last year, a total of 22 double-sided commemorative banners were erected on light standards in downtown North Battleford through this partnership program between Legion Branch No. 70 and the City of North Battleford. The Legion hopes to see the program continue to grow for the 2023 initiative.

Since the North Battleford Legion started with the program, each year several more banners have been installed.

The city’s public works department puts up the banners each year.

Oster said the Veterans Banners program continues to see positive feedback from the public.

“We’ve had a very good response,” she said. “Last year we handed out 30 applications.”

Oster said while the applications didn’t all come back for sponsorship, she believes the uptick for the program has been strong.
