Mar 7, 2023 | 11:05 AM

Police are charging two people with criminal negligence charges causing death after a man was found dead in the Garson Lake area last month.

Nathan Piche, 34, was reported missing to La Loche RCMP on Feb. 14 after he was last seen two days earlier. He was found deceased on Feb. 17, around one km from where he was last seen.

Piche’s death and its circumstances were investigated by the La Loche RCMP and Saskatchewan Major Crimes, along with the Forensic Identification Services and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

Police ended up arresting 28-year-old Clayton Fontaine from La Loche on March 3 in connection to Piche’s death. Shortly after his arrest, he said he was in medical distress and was transported to hospital. At the hospital, Fontaine allegedly attempted to assault police. It was later determined he was not in medical distress.

He has since been charged with criminal negligence causing death, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, and assaulting a police officer.

He appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on March 6.

Erica Herman, 35, of Janvier, Alberta was charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death. A warrant was issued for her arrest and she was taken into custody by Wood Buffalo RCMP in Janvier on March 6.

Her court date is pending as arrangements are being made for her return to Saskatchewan.
