Case for man connected to Battleford attack returns to court

The case for a man who pleaded guilty to an attack caught on video in Battleford was back at North Battleford Provincial Court Monday.

Adam Lesmeister, 46, of Battleford, was originally facing a charge of assault in the July 17, 2022 incident. The charge was since upgraded to assault causing bodily harm.

When he previously appeared in court on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, he entered a guilty plea to the charge.

At court Feb. 13, defence lawyer Randy Kirkham requested to have the sentencing hearing scheduled. Judge Ian William Mokuruk set the hearing for April 27, 2023.

A second accused in the matter, Dane Lesmeister, 19, initially faced a charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. His matter was dealt with through the Alternative Measures program. As a result, the charge was dismissed on Jan. 23, 2023.

Battlefords RCMP Sgt. Neil Tremblay previously said in an email to battlefordsNOW that only two people were facing charges in the case.

According to the RCMP’s prior report, police responded to a complaint of an assault on 17 Street East in Battleford at the time of the incident.

The initial investigation found that a man was approached by three men he did not know. One of the three men assaulted him and all three left the area before officers arrived. The victim received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) issued a statement following the incident, calling the attack racially motivated.
