Coming off a showstopping performance at the SJHL/MJHL Showcase, the Battlefords North Stars will return to league play Thursday night in Wilcox, against the division rival Notre Dame Hounds.

The North Stars (37-3-2-1) enter play in top spot of the league standings with 77 points, having recently returned to top-billing in the CJHL Top 20 Rankings. The Stars are coming off a 6-2 victory in Melville Saturday, having won three straight overall.

The Hounds (14-19-3-2) sit ninth overall with 33 points, just five back of Weyburn for the eighth and final playoff spot, while holding two games in-hand. Coming off a 5-1 win over Kindersley Friday, the Hounds will look to make it two straight against their probable first-round foe should they sneak into the post-season, in the Stars.

The North Stars are led into play by recently named SJHL Defenceman of the Month, Tynan Ewart.

Ewart is coming off a dominant month of January that saw the Duncan, BC., product score 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) in 12 games, in addition to his usual heavy-lifting on the defensive end. In 42 games this season, Ewart leads all SJHL defencemen with 40 points in 42 games heading into play.

Stars’ forwards Kian Bell and Steven Kesslering, and defenceman Jordan Grill also enter play red-hot from the Showcase, having each earned ‘Star of the Game’ honours for standout performances over the two-day event.

Kesslering scored two goals and added an assist over the two days, while Grill was recognized for his all-around play, and Bell closed the tournament with a show-stealing hat trick performance in his second of two games.

Holden Doell (3A), Jake Southgate (2A) and Jackson Allan (1G, 3A) are also coming off multi-point games to close out the Showcase.

Hounds forward, Will Dawson was one of three players to represent Notre Dame at the Showcase, picking up an assist on Kesslering’s opening-game tally with U20 Team Gold, in a highlight 2-on-1.

Dawson leads the Hounds this season with 35 points in 37 games, and is also coming off a two-point (1G, 1A) outing in ND’s win over Kindersley from the weekend.

Also providing an offensive spark for the Hounds of late is Carson Baylis, who is coming off a hat-trick performance against his former team (Kindersley) and enters play with five goals in his last three games.

In goal, Justen Maric will get the start for the Stars. In 12 games this season, Maric is 11-1-0-0 with a 2.65 goals against average and .928 save percentage.

Notre Dame are likely to give the nod to Johann Tremblay-Kau. Tremblay-Kau stopped 28/29 in his team’s win over Kindersley, and was excellent in the Hounds’ last meeting versus the Stars, making 47 saves on 53 shots against.

Tremblay-Kau is 4-6-0-1 record through 11 games, with a 4.46 goals against average and .879 save percentage.

Thursday’s game in Wilcox will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin slightly later than usual at 7:30 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 8 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
