Firefighters battle house fire in North Battleford

UPDATE: The North Battleford Fire Department finished putting out the house fire, and the area is now open to traffic again. The fire was contained to the one house where the fire originated, which was deemed a total loss. No adjacent structures were impacted.

Deputy Fire Chief Paul Perry told battlefordsNOW the family of eight residing at the house are now being assisted by the Canadian Red Cross.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is still being determined. Perry said the fire department responded to the fire after receiving a call at about 7:30 a.m., Wednesday. The residents were all evacuated.

Perry said the fire started in the basement of the house. It wasn’t safe for firefighters to enter the structure, so they focused on extinguishing the blaze from the outside, while also protecting the two homes on either side, which were also evacuated.

“They [the firefighters] did an excellent job,” he said. “We had lots of support from our paid-on-call volunteers.” He added the community safety officers and the RCMP were also on scene and helped by also evacuating the two neighbouring homes, and controlling the area.”

North Battleford firefighters were on the job Wednesday morning trying to quell a raging house fire on 103 Street near 16th Avenue in North Battleford.

The City of North Battleford said in a release there were no injuries reported in the fire. The cause is still being determined.

A next door neighbour told battlefordsNOW her home was also evacuated as a precaution at around 8 a.m. She was concerned about her house.

“The fire looks pretty big, and we’re worried about the truck in the driveway,” Marietta Starchief said.

She said her six-year-old son was keeping safe in the warming-vehicle that was sent to the location by first responders.

Officials are asking people to keep clear of the area, while crews continue to work to put out the blaze today.

Update to follow.
