Stars cash in for 10th straight with OT win in Melville

It took just 1:48 into sudden death overtime for a Zane Florence slap shot from the high slot to win it, and deliver the Battlefords North Stars a 3-2 victory Friday night in Melville.

Extending the Stars’ winning streak to 10 straight, the victory wasn’t without overcoming adversity, as the Stars would not gain their first lead of the night until the final play of the game.

A 1-0 Millionaires lead by the end of the first, and 2-0 advantage by the end of the second, the Stars scored a pair in the third period to push the game to extra time, and set up the OT heroics.

Holden Doell’s 16^th of the season came just 38 seconds into the third period on a breakaway for his second goal in the last two nights, to cut the Stars’ deficit in half, down 2-1.

Jake Southgate’s 11^th on a power play one-timer midway through the frame then brought the team back to even, for the first time since the 5:16 mark of the first when Melville first took the lead.

Florence’s winner came off a howitzer set up by Doell, following a two-on-one chance with Kian Bell at the side of the goal. The tally marks the Battlefords’ hometown product’s fifth goal of the season and second game-winner.

With the victory, the North Stars extend their league leading record to 27-0-2-1 this season, and with 57 points now sit 13 up on second place, La Ronge who lead the field with 44 points.

The team will now have one more game Saturday night to cap their three-in-three road swing and head into the Christmas break. Saturday’s game will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m., and puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
