A pair of Battlefords North Stars have been recognized amongst the best at their position in the nation, with the release of the selection camp rosters for the 2022 World Junior A Challenge.

Stars’ bench boss Brayden Klimosko has been named to the four-man coaching staff as an assistant with Team Canada West, while top-line centre Holden Doell was one of just four players from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League named to the selection camp roster as a hopeful for this year’s club.

Klimosko’s status amongst the elite coaches in the country has been well-documented as the two-time defending SJHL Coach of the Year, and a two-time CJHL Coach of the Year nominee.

With a league championship on his resume (2019) and a league-best 67.5 percent win percentage (135-44-21 record) since joining the team, Klimosko has again led the Stars to an SJHL-best 20-0-2-1 record this season for top billing in the CJHL six weeks running.

The Humboldt, Sask., product said being named to the Canada West staff presents another opportunity he’s looking forward to.

“It’s exciting. I never knew someday I was going to be able to represent my country so it will be a cool experience and I’m looking forward to it,” Klimosko said of being named to the team.

The veteran bench boss added that he’s happy to see Doell among the names selected to compete for a roster spot, having seen first-hand the work he’s put in again this season.

“He’s having a heck of a year and he’s only ramped it up since coming back from those injuries [to start the year],” Klimosko said. “It’s a huge honour for him and I’m excited he’s going to have a chance to make a pretty high-level hockey team.”

Doell joins Humboldt’s Ethan Zielke, Flin Flon’s Jeremi Tremblay, and Melfort’s Zac Somers as the four players from the Saskatchewan League invited to the Canada West camp. The 19-year-old is also one of just six ‘03s on the camp roster.

Doell leads the SJHL in scoring with 37 points in 19 games, while his 1.95 points per game average are also a league-high. A Martensville product, Doell said it would be ‘something special’ to make the team.

“Whenever you get to play for your country it’s a special experience, so I’m looking forward to [the opportunity],” he said. “It’s awesome to be recognized as one of the top players in the SJHL, and all of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, and I’m looking forward to it. It should be a good experience.”

In 60 career games with the Stars, Doell has scored 22 goals and 50 assists for 72 points.

Canada West will hold its 31-player selection camp Dec. 5-7 in Cornwall, ON., which will consist of three days of practices and scrimmage games against the 32 players vying for a spot on the Canada East roster.

There will be two intrasquad games between the West and East before final rosters are named, Dec. 7. The 2022 World Junior A Challenge is set for Dec. 11-18 at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

The invites for Team Canada West were chosen from the CJHL’s four western leagues – the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), and Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL).

Team Canada East will be comprised of players from the five eastern leagues – the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL), Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL), Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec (LHJAAAQ) and Maritime Hockey League (MHL).
