École Père Mercure students plan trade show fundraiser for trip to Quebec area

Kids at École Père Mercure (EPM), North Battleford’s francophone school, plan to hold a trade show fundraiser to help with costs for their trip to the Quebec area.

Called the EPM Winter Trade Show, the fundraiser event is open to the public. It will be held Dec. 2 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the school.

All proceeds will benefit the school trip in June.

For the big trip, students in Grades 6 to 9 will visit Quebec City, Montreal, and Ottawa to learn more about French culture. They will visit some castles and various museums, and will also spend a day at the Parliament buildings while in Ottawa.

“It’s an educational trip. They will have some free time, but probably less than they think,” said teacher Ashley Teckchandani, who is organizing the journey.

The six-day excursion is being offered through EF Educational Tours.

“It is going to be probably a bilingual tour because we will be paired with another school that likely won’t speak French,” Teckchandani said. “But we are a francophone school, so we want them [the students] to get to know their culture. We are French Canadian, francophone, and Saskatchewan Fransaskois. That’s how we refer to ourselves.”

To help raise funds for the journey, the school plans to hold several fundraisers. For the upcoming fundraiser trade show next month, Teckchandani said people can expect to see a variety of items.

“There will be some antique sales, Tupperware, a baking and jam table …,” she said.

The event will also feature some books for sale, a canteen, face-painting, as well as a variety of vendors booths with items for sale. There will also be raffle prizes offered.

Teckchandani is encouraging people to drop by the trade show and show their support for the students’ trip.

“We appreciate any community support,” she said. “We’re really trying to get out there more into the community to get to know people and get more involved… [The students] are really willing to work for their trip.”

Teckchandani is also putting the word out for any vendors interested in participating in the trade show to contact the school for details.
