Town gets ready to present 2023 proposed budget

Nov 22, 2022 | 3:41 AM

Town of Battleford administration will present its proposed 2023 budget at the upcoming Dec. 12 council meeting.

The issue was discussed at Monday’s council meeting.

Mayor Ames Leslie said following the meeting the draft of the proposed budget will be released to the public a few days before it is presented to council on Dec. 12.

There will be a public hearing at the start of the meeting. If there are no issues, council may have an opportunity to pass the budget that evening.

“Anybody can voice anything there if they wish,” Leslie said. “If there is no huge opposition to anything within the budget, then we will look to pass it that night, and get it done that night. If not, we’ll call a special meeting and get it done a few days after. But my goal is always, ever since I took over as mayor, is to have our budgets approved and ready to go for Jan. 1.”

Leslie describes the draft as a fairly “small, modest” budget being proposed by town administration.

“We [council] had a quick sneak-peak of it here last week. It is looking like it is going to be very much on not spending as much money, and not looking to have to do much of an increase this year,” he said. “Just the state of the economy, and at the rate of what our money is collecting by sitting in the bank, it’s looking at one of those years where it’s, kind of, let the rainy day fund grow for future projects, look to not have a big impact on anybody’s pocket this year, and try and do our best to minimize any cost to the taxpayers.”
