Crusaders senior girls win provincial silver

For the second straight year, the Crusaders senior girls are provincial silver medalists.

Competing in the 4A provincial tournament in Nipawin over the weekend, John Paul II Collegiate hit the ground running, winning three of their four round-robin games – and five of their seven overall – on their way to the year-end hardware.

The Crusaders girls opened the tournament with victories over Moose Jaw, Tisdale, and Martensville, before falling to Lumsden in their final game of the round-robin, to enter the playoff rounds 3-1.

In the quarter-finals, JPII then topped Humboldt in straight sets 25-19 and 25-17 to advance to the semis, where they would face their greatest challenge yet in Meadow Lake.

The Crusaders took the opening set of the semifinals 27-25 in a down-to-the-wire victory, before closing out their regional foe with a 25-18 win in the second set, to return to the provincial final for the second straight year.

“The semifinal was definitely our key match,” Crusaders’ head coach, Cherelle Cadrain said. “It was pretty high intensity against Meadow Lake right from the start as we had lost to them the weekend before, so we went into provincials seeded lower than them, so as much as every game is important that one was even more so.”

The victory set up a provincial final against Lumsden to play for the gold. Falling 25-17 in the opening set, JPII pushed the eventual champs to the brink in the second, playing to a 22-22 tie, ahead of a 25-22 Lumsden final, giving JPII the silver.

Despite the loss in the finals, Cadrain said she and the coaching staff, also made up of Doug Seiben and Cooper Olson, couldn’t be more proud of the team’s work this season.

“Only two girls’ teams out of the Battle West Division made it to provincials, and to come home with another silver medal is a great accomplishment,” Cadrain said. “The girls represented our school and our community really well and played every game like it was our last.”

The Crusaders senior boys were also in action over the weekend, taking home a second-place finish at Regionals. The senior boys will advance to their provincial tournament in Meadow Lake next weekend.
