‘Lights of Joy’ illuminations return for holiday season

Downtown Battleford was the place to be on Saturday evening when the “Lights of Joy” display officially launched.

Battleford Community Spirit Group (BCSG) turned on the lights at about 6 p.m. during a gathering at the gazebo at the Historic Lions Park on 22nd Street.

About 30 turned out for the event that included a hot drink and snacks donated by Tim Hortons restaurant.

BCSG president Tim Pruden said it was great to see everyone out to celebrate.

“It turned out really well,” he said. “We were able to give out some hot chocolate and some cookies. Everybody counted down very loudly, and we turned the lights on. It’s just a really good [attraction], and people enjoy it. It was a very positive event.”

Similar to previous years, businesses and community members made donations to purchase decorative lights for each of the 16 trees that adorn the park to support the fundraiser project.

“We have had donations from different businesses. Everybody has been very generous,” Pruden said. “Everyone was happy to give and donate. They should all be noted on the banners who gave. We try to acknowledge everybody as best as we can, and really appreciate it.”

The gazebo itself was also decorated for the event, that is now in its fourth year running. The lights display will stay on until after Christmas.

All proceeds from the event benefit the BCSG non-profit organization’s activities during the year.

“We return all the money we get back into the community,” Pruden said.

Over the recent years, the group has bought benches for the pump track bike park, and tables with attached benches for the seniors’ exercise park located near the Alex Dillabough Centre, as part of its efforts to support the community.

Pruden encourages people to visit the “Lights of Joy” illuminations over the holiday season.

“I invite everybody to come by and have a look,” he said. “In the evening, they are all lit up very nice. I invite everybody to take a drive by. It’s a nice little park, even in the winter-time.”
