New People's Choice Award

City planning Twinkle Tours ‘Light Up the Night’ event

Nov 16, 2022 | 5:00 AM

The City of North Battleford has some new plans ahead this year for its 2022 Community Christmas and Twinkle Tours event.

Similar to last year, the Twinkle Tours display of decorated homes in the community will be self-guided again in 2022. City administration will then select a winner in each of the two categories – Best House and Best Block – from the participating homes in the tour. There will also be an award for the Best Commercial Entry for decorated businesses. Winners will be announced through the city’s website and on its social media sites.

New this year, the city is introducing a People’s Choice Award. According to the City, residents will be able to upload photos of their Christmas lights display at their property in North Battleford from Nov. 18 to Dec. 15 on CJNB’s website. Online voting for the People’s Choice Award will take place from Dec. 16 to 19, so the public can choose their favourite display.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, the city plans to hold the inaugural “Light Up The Night” event outside at the InnovationPlex Rotary Plaza in North Battleford, and the People’s Choice Award winner will be announced.

The gathering will start at 6:30 p.m. and will include free hot chocolate and a special guest performance for the kids. The event will also include participation from a variety of community partners, such as CJNB, Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC), Battlefords Regional Community Coalition (BRCC), local youth, community-based organizations and other groups.

“We as a council were excited that there is going to be a People’s Choice Award. As well as of course [there will be] the traditional – Best Home and Best Block. That’s not changing,” Mayor David Gillan said. “And the tour will still be self-guided like it has been the last couple of years.”

He added that including an award for the best business display is also a great idea for this year’s festivities.

Gillan said it will be an exciting time to get into the holiday spirit.

The city said the aim of the Twinkle Tours and Community Christmas event this year is to highlight and showcase the “spirit, beauty and diversity of our region, and to come together in celebration of Christmas while sharing each other’s cultures.”
