Residents on the hook to replace garbage bins destroyed by overnight vandalism

North Battleford city officials and community safety officers received multiple calls Tuesday morning, about damaged garbage bins.

The city believes the damage is the result of an unknown number of individuals who destroyed several bins in the 1100 and 1300 blocks of 105 Street.

Area resident Cameron Dyck came out of his home this morning and discovered his bin has serious damage.

“First thing in the morning, I usually come and and put the garbage back. And I found it laying over on the side. The lid was still open, smashed and wheel pieces at the other end of the driveway,” he said.

In a media release, the city of North Battleford said it will repair bins that can be fixed but residents are on the hook to cover the replacement cost for destroyed bins.

“Bins damaged beyond repair will require replacement at the resident’s/property owner’s expense a cost of $120/bin + GST,” the release said.

Dyck said he’s not happy about having to cover the cost of a new garbage bin.

“I don’t feel like I should have to pay for one. It was not damage caused by myself. So, why should I have to pay?” he said.

In an emailed statement to battlefordsNOW, City Clerk Stacey Hadley said historically, the cost of replacing waste management bins has always been the responsibility of the property owner or resident, citing section 18 of the waste management bylaw.

“The owner or occupant of a designated property is responsible for the loss of or damage to the carts assigned to that property and is responsible to advise the city of such loss or damage. Replacement costs for lost or damaged carts will be charged to the owner or occupant of the designated property to which the carts were assigned,” she said.

In the media release from the city, it says the best practice is to put waste bins on the street the morning of pick up and not the night before.

The city reminds residents that this type of vandalism is a criminal offence. City administrators encourage anybody with security footage, or information about the damage to contact the Community Safety Officers at 306-445-1775 or Battlefords RCMP at 306-446-1720.
