City recognizes Veterans’ Week with flag-raising ceremony

The City of North Battleford recognized Veterans’ Week, which runs Nov. 5 to 11, with a special flag-raising ceremony outside city hall Monday.

The week will culminate with the Remembrance Day service at the Don Ross Centre auditorium in North Battleford on Nov. 11.

“It’s a very important day on the 11th when we remember and we reflect on all those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms, and those that are still with us, and those who didn’t come home,” Mayor David Gillan said.

The city will also lower the city flags to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Nov. 8 to recognize national Indigenous Veterans Day.

North Battleford Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 70 representatives took part in the Veterans’ Week flag-raising ceremony at city hall on Nov. 7.

Legion Branch No. 70 president Gordon Brown said it will be good to see the community get together on Nov. 11 for the first fully public Remembrance Day service since before the pandemic.

“We have been absent for a few years, [so] I hope to see quite a few people come out,” he said.

It will be a good opportunity to remember all the veterans, including the younger ones.

Brown said it will be sad not to have Marilyn Clark, the Legion’s former president there at the service, as she passed away in July of this year.

“[Clark has served with the Legion] probably 35 years at least. We are going to miss her deeply, very deeply,” he said. “She was well liked. I hope we can follow in her footsteps and continue working for the Legion.”

After the Remembrance Day service, people are invited to stop by to have a light lunch at the Legion Branch No. 70, which will open at 12 p.m. that day.
