Stars take second of weekend road trip, top Wings 4-3

Nov 6, 2022 | 12:47 AM

Owen Underhill scored the first of his SJHL career just 18 seconds into the night Satuday, to get the Battlefords North Stars up and running in Weyburn.

The rookie’s tally was the first of four from four different players for the Stars, as Jake Southgate, Kian Bell and Tynan Ewart also scored for the team on their way to a 4-3 victory over the Wings, while goalie Josh Kotai stopped 28 of 31 shots against for the win.

Southgate’s goal made it 2-0 Stars just under five minutes into the first on his eighth of the season, serving as his first of two points on the night, and sixth through the first two games of the weekend.

After Wings’ captain Matthew Reidy scored to cut his team’s deficit to 2-1 at the end of the first, Sam Boldt and Mi-Kwan Tallman scored back-to-back early in the second, just 2:03 apart to reverse the lead entirely making it 3-2 Red Wings.

That was until Weyburn’s Matteo Turrin took a 5:00 major penalty for a hit to the head that opened the door for a North Stars response.

Kian Bell re-knotted the score at 3-3 on his team-leading 14th of the year and third in his last two games, before Tynan Ewart added his fourth, and second in his last two, on the same man advantage to put the Stars back in front at 4-3 on a goal that would also serve as the eventual game winner.

With the win, the Stars extend their league-leading record to now 17-0-1-1 through their opening 19 games. The team will look to sweep their weekend three-in-three road swing Sunday in Wilcox against the division rival Notre Dame Hounds.

Due to the CFL game on 1050 CJNB, Sunday’s game will be available on 93.3 The Rock. An afternoon contest, the Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 4 p.m. with puck drop at 4:30 p.m.
