North Battleford Legion Branch recognizes veterans with banner program

Nov 1, 2022 | 2:00 PM

North Battleford Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 70 is once again paying tribute to local veterans with the “Honour Our Veterans” banner program.

This is the third year the branch has been taking part in the project.

“It is with great pride we are able to display these banners for the Remembrance Day period to honour these veterans, lest we forget,” Legion secretary Louise Oster said.

The legion has 10 new banners this year, so that brings the total number of banners on display up to 48 for the 2022 program. The banners are hanging on light standards on the 1200 and 1300 blocks of 100 Street in North Battleford.

“Remember, when looking at them you have to drive up and down the street because they are double-sided,” Oster added.

To take part in the program, families sponsor a banner to recognize one of their loved ones who are veterans.

In the initial year of the North Battleford banner program, the Fred Light Museum assisted, since it started the “Honour Our Veterans” banner project in the Town of Battleford. For the past two years, the Legion Branch No. 70 and the City of North Battleford have been running the North Battleford banner program on their own.

Oster said a video is being made on the North Battleford banners for 2022, which will be available soon on the Legion No. 70 Facebook Page.

The banners in North Battleford were erected on Oct. 15 of this year, and will remain on display until Nov. 15.

“We are very pleased to participate in the ‘Honour our Veterans’ banner program,” Oster said. “I would really like to thank the community of North Battleford for becoming involved in this program.”

She also thanked the City of North Battleford for supporting the veterans’ banner program, as well as city crews for hanging the banners.

Oster said the program is receiving positive feedback from the community, and keeps growing, as more people are inspired to put up a banner to remember their family’s veterans.

“We have already received several requests to do it again next year,” she said.

Coming up on Monday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. a flag-raising ceremony will be held at City Hall in North Battleford to commemorate Veterans’ Week, which runs Nov. 5 to 11.

Remembrance Day service

Oster wants to remind everyone that the community Remembrance Day service will take place at the Don Ross Centre auditorium in North Battleford on Friday, Nov. 11 this year. People planning to attend should arrive at about 10:30 a.m. since everyone will need to be seated by 10:45 a.m. The ceremony was previously held at the John Paul II Collegiate, but had to be moved this year since the building is currently being renovated.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on CJNB.

After the service, everyone is invited to visit the Legion Branch 70, which will open at 12 p.m.

Oster said this year’s Remembrance Day service will be the first one open to the public again since 2019. Due to the pandemic, the ceremony was held virtually for the last two years.
