Battlefords and Meadow Lake area expecting first significant snow event of the season

You may want to dig out the winder shovels and have them at the ready. The Battlefords and Meadow Lake area is expecting the first significant snow event of the season.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the Battlefords and Meadow Lake Wednesday afternoon. Snowfall is expected to start Tuesday night but will be the heaviest beginning Wednesday morning. Accumulations of up to 15 cm are possible before it is forecast to taper off Thursday morning. Lloydminster, Prince Albert, Kindersley, Rosetown, and Biggar are also under snowfall warnings.

The City of North Battleford Public Relations Coordinator Candace Toma said road crews have been prepping for snow and they’re ready.

“Our sanding trucks will be out and about. Graders, lots of plows. As long as that visibility is good, they’ve assured us they will be out and about,” she said.

The city reminds residents that a city bylaw says they have to shovel the public sidewalks around their properties. Designated downtown areas have 24 hours to shovel while the rest of the city has 48 hours. Toma said the city can issue tickets for violations.

“The CSO’s [community safety officers] can enforce those bylaws related to snow removal. It’s better to be proactive, get that snow removed so you’re not worrying about a ticket from a community safety officer,” she said.

If you need a new shovel or snowblower, you can find them at many local stores in the Battlefords. Staff at Home Hardware in North Battleford say some customers are already coming in and getting ready. One customer bought four shovels.

Home Hardware General Manager and owner Earle Toews said they have pretty much everything you would need in stock.

“It’s been a bit of a challenge with the inventory and collecting inventory and getting transportation on the road to get it here. But it’s here and ready to go,” he said.

The City of North Battleford wants to remind everyone that with the first significant snow event, people may want to be prepared to adjust their driving habits for the conditions. Toma adds if conditions deteriorate to try and stay off the roads.

“Our crews have asked us to relay the message that please stay off the roads and allow the snow removal equipment that the city has to do those jobs and make sure everything is clear before you head out,” she said.

Snow is expected to continue falling through Wednesday before clearing off Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
