Stars fall to Broncos in OT, take three of four points in weekend series

The Battlefords North Stars fell 3-2 in overtime to Humboldt Saturday, for just their second loss this season.

A tight game down to the wire in the 3-on-3 sudden-death period, the final shot of the night came from Broncos’ forward Lucas Ceccarelli from the left circle, snapping a shot off the post-and-in to deliver the Broncos the victory.

Evan Waldie and Riley Girod scored for the Stars in the defeat, while goalie Josh Kotai made 39 saves on 42 shots against.

Alec Saretzky and Cage Newans scored the two Broncos’ goals in regulation on the night, with Tristan Boileau stopping 26 of 28 shots for the win.

A 1-0 Broncos’ lead through 20 minutes on Saretzky’s eighth, Waldie (with his third) and Newans (his ninth) then traded goals in the second to make it 2-1 Humboldt after 40.

In the third, Girod’s third of the season knotted the score to send the game to overtime, on a Stars’ power play at the 7:46 mark.

In OT, Kotai made a 10-bell save on Ceccarelli on the breakaway early in the frame to set up a rush chance the other way. There, Steven Kesslering found Jake Southgate for a quick one-timer from his strong-side, that Boileau somehow got across to save to keep the puck out.

Off the ensuing face-off, Ceccarelli then raced down ice to ultimately win the game on a perfect shot, off the post-and-in.

Despite the loss, the Stars still pick up a single point in the league standings, and extend their league-leading record to 15-0-2 with 32 points. Humboldt, in second place, are now 13-3 with 26 points.

Following their back-to-back with the Broncos, the North Stars will now get nearly a full week off, before setting out on one of their busiest weekends of the season next weekend.

The team will embark on a three-games in three-nights road swing through southern Sask. next, playing in Estevan Friday, Weyburn Saturday and Notre Dame Sunday.

Friday’s NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB. With an earlier puck drop than usual at 7 p.m., the Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 6:30 p.m.
