Stars look for weekend sweep of Broncos, in bid for sixth straight

Oct 29, 2022 | 3:43 PM

The Battlefords North Stars return to the road Saturday night in Humboldt, for part two of their back-to-back weekend series with the division-rival Broncos.

The road game will be the Stars’ first since Oct. 4 in La Ronge, following an eight-game homestand for the team.

The North Stars enter play with an SJHL-best 15-0-1 record, giving them 31 points. Winners of five straight, the team are coming off a 5-2 victory last night over the second-place Broncos (12-3 for 24 points), with a chance to add further separation between the two clubs atop the league standings.

The Stars saw five different players score in Friday’s win, not including forward Holden Doell, who picked up a pair of assists and enters play as the hottest player in the Saskatchewan league.

Doell is coming off five-straight multipoint games, with six goals and 14 points over the span. With now 23 points in 12 games, Doell is tied with teammates Jake Southgate and Kian Bell for second overall in the league scoring race, just a single point back of Estevan’s Kade Runke who has played 19 games.

Humboldt’s Xavier Roy leads the Broncos with 18 points in 15 games, while Cage Newans, who scored Friday, and Alec Saretzky round out the top three in team scoring with 17 points apiece.

At the other end, Humboldt could go with Tristian Boileau or Benjamin Motew.

Boileau started Friday, stopping 31/36 shots on the loss. In 11 games this season, the 19-year-old has posted a 7-3 record with a 2.81 goals against average and .905 save percentage.

Motew is 5-0 this season with a 3.20 goals against average and .888 save percentage.

Due to the Rider game on 1050 CJNB, Saturday’s North Stars’ game will available on 93.3 The Rock. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will begin with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
