Food Bank in need of donations

The local food bank is in need of donations.

Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre (BDFRC) executive director Erin Katerynych said any contributions of non-perishable food items would be greatly appreciated.

She said more people are using the food bank that serves the Battlefords area compared to the same time last year, so she is encouraging people to do what they can to help.

“With the inflated food and fuel prices, food insecurity is a Canada-wide concern,” she said. “The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre here in the Battlefords is feeling the pinch.”

Over the past six months, the food bank has helped about 1,835 people on average in a single month.

“Unfortunately, we are not keeping up with the demand,” Katerynych said. “The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre has had to cut back on food items in the hampers because of the lack of food on our shelves.”

The non-perishable items the food bank is most in need of include: pasta and tomato sauce, pasta, rice, canned meat, canned soup, beans, chunky stews, chili, peanut butter, jam, honey, baby formula, diapers, canned veggies, fruit, cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, personal hygiene products, feminine hygiene products, and house cleaning items.

The food bank, located at 1171 101 St. in North Battleford, also accepts perishable food donations, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, as well.

“We live in a very giving community. At Thanksgiving it would be great if people thought of us and would donate, so that [more] people can have a great Thanksgiving,” Katerynych said.
