Crookedneck receives three years for apartment building fire charges

One of the people facing charges in connection with the Jan. 3 apartment building fire in North Battleford has been sentenced to three years in prison

Keeanu Crookedneck, 22, of North Battleford, pleaded guilty to arson with disregard for human life.

In his sentencing hearing at North Battleford provincial court on Sept. 30, Crookedneck was given three years in custody.

When factoring in credit for time served, he has 689 days or about one year and 11 months left.

The other accused, Naomi Jean Yellowtail, 43, is facing a charge of arson with disregard for human life. She is scheduled for a trial in February of 2023.

According to prior reports, in total up to around 40 adults and up to 10 children were displaced as a result of the fire that destroyed the apartment building at 1441 102nd St.

The building’s residents were successfully evacuated. Seventeen residents and six emergency responders were transported to hospital and were later released.
