City reminds residents to shovel their sidewalks when the snow falls

Sep 28, 2022 | 3:07 PM

While it may be balmy outside today, the start of the nasty winter season is just around the corner.

The City of North Battleford is getting a head start on the season by reminding people that when the snow falls, they will be responsible for cleaning the sidewalk in front of their homes and businesses.

The city wants to remind everyone there is Sidewalk Clearing Bylaw in place, and people have a responsibility to remove snow from their sidewalks after a snow event. There are fines for failure to comply with the bylaw.

“On residential sidewalks in front of people’s property, they are supposed to clear their sidewalks within 48 hours,” Mayor David Gillan said. “And, of course on the commercial properties downtown, for example, it’s 24 hours. We try to remind people that these are requirements because we don’t have the services in the city to do everybody’s sidewalk. So we require people to clean their sidewalks, as part of their contribution.”

City director of operations Stewart Schafer noted for commercial properties downtown and on 100 Street (Railway Avenue to 14 Avenue), people are required to clean their sidewalks within 24 hours after it’s stopped snowing. People can push the snow from their sidewalk onto the city road. However, they should not move the snow from their driveways or parking lots onto the roadway.

“That’s too much snow for us to handle,” Schafer said.

But to clear a city sidewalk in front of their property, if people don’t have enough room on their grass to move the snow or their property is a commercial establishment downtown that is up to the property line, they can push the snow from the sidewalk onto the roadway, and the city will remove it.
