Town planning free drive-in movie night

Area residents will have more fun things to do in the Battlefords this fall.

The Town of Battleford announced at this week’s council meeting it is planning a free drive-in movie event, called “Movie Night at the Elevator.”

The feature film, “Space Jam: New Legacy,” will be projected onto the historic Southgate elevator building, on the west side of Battleford, for the Oct. 14 screening, according to town community planner Paige Hundt’s submitted report. The movie will start at 7 p.m.

“Anything you can get your community out to do is always good …,” Coun. Kevin Russell said of the proposal. “Getting involved in the community, and stuff like that is awesome.”

Coun. Alexis Christensen also supported the project.

“Obviously, I’m excited,” she said, adding that anything the town can do to bring families together is a great idea.

Administration recommended temporarily closing the road near the site to provide more space for vehicles to attend the movie.

Council approved the proposal to close 5 Avenue, from Telegraph Road to Highway 40, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the day of the event for the show.

Mayor Ames Leslie took the opportunity to thank the local sponsors for giving two thumbs up for movie night, and supporting this project.

“We’re seeing more and more sponsors wanting to get on board with our town events, which is always welcome; I’m very grateful,” he said. “I’m looking forward to this as well.”
