The case of two men dealing with charges related to a July 17 attack caught on video in Battleford returned to court Monday.

Dane Lesmeister, 19, is facing a charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Defence lawyer Randy Kirkham advised Judge Kevin Hill at North Battleford provincial court that the matter is being referred to the Alternative Measures Program in this instance.

Dane’s case will return to court on Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m. for an update.

Co-accused Adam Lesmeister, 46, of Battleford, is charged with assault in the incident.

Kirkham said he has been involved in discussions on the matter with the Crown prosecutor.

As a result, Adam’s case has been adjourned to Oct. 6, while awaiting disclosure.

Battlefords RCMP Sgt. Neil Tremblay previously said in an email to battlefordsNOW that only two people are facing charges in the case.

Police said they responded to a complaint of an assault on 17th Street East in Battleford at the time of the incident

The initial investigation found that a man was approached by three men he did not know. One of the three men allegedly assaulted him; all three left the area before officers arrived. The victim received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) issued a statement following the incident, calling the attack racially motivated.
