Town closed for National Day of Mourning for Queen’s passing

The Town of Battleford is advising residents it will be closed Sept. 19 to observe the federal holiday, to mark the passing of the Queen.

Arena bookings will not be affected by the closure and will continue as normal, according to the town’s Facebook Page.

All town departments will be open again for normal hours of operation on Tuesday, Sept. 20th.

“We are honouring [Monday] as a Day of Mourning,” Mayor Ames Leslie told battlefordsNOW. “Our departments will be closed as per our union agreement.”

He said the town hopes many of its employees take advantage of the day and attend the Royal Canadian Legion Battleford Branch No. 9 memorial service, which will be held at the cenotaph.

The town is treating Sept. 19 similar to a statutory holiday, with most staff off for the day, just as the city is doing.

“Our employees won’t be working [Monday] but will be back up and running as usual on Tuesday,” Leslie said. “The council meeting, as well, that was scheduled for Monday has now been moved to Tuesday.”

The town will still have the necessary staff on duty on Sept. 19 for its operations services, as usual.

“The water department, the essential services, the fire department and everything will be staffed to make sure that everything runs in the town that is essential,” Leslie said.
