Homeless shelter thanks community for support during staff shortage

The Battlefords homeless shelter, known as Miwasin Kikinaw, had its kitchen closed for a few days this past week due to a temporary staff shortage.

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC), which operates the shelter located in North Battleford, said fortunately a number of businesses stepped up during the interim to provide hot meals for the clients until everything was back to normal again.

BATC Director of Operations Terrance Thomas thanked the local businesses who supported the shelter with hot meals when they were needed, to make sure clients continued to have access to nutritious food and didn’t go hungry.

“Basically, the option was closing the kitchen and not having any food,” he said. “Then, I reached out personally to industry partners who then donated food.”

Several local establishments – Tim Hortons, Sobeys and Boston Pizza – made contributions to help the shelter for the period from Sept. 9 to Sept. 11. Everything has since returned to normal and staff are back at work again.

“It was a great donation, and good participation,” Thomas said of all the support the shelter received.
