Ewart’s pair lifts Stars to OT victory

Tynan Ewart picked up his second goal of the game just 30 seconds into overtime, as the Battlefords North Stars topped Kindersley 4-3 in pre-season action, Tuesday night in North Battleford.

Scoring the OT winner on a quick release joining the rush, Ewart said following the game what he saw on the play as it developed.

“I had lots of ice, lots of time and it was a great pass by Doeller (Stars’ forward, Holden Doell),” Ewart said. “I just knew I had to shoot it and luckily it went in.

“It feels awesome; Kindersley’s our rival and we were able to get the job done, so that’s always a good feeling.”

Serving as the Stars’ first pre-season game on their home ice this year, the team put on a show for the local crowd, battling back from a 3-1 deficit midway through the second on their way to the victory.

Forward, Ethan Scriven was the lone North Star to score in the first period, with his tally sandwiched between a pair of Klippers’ goals from Aiden Bangs and Matthew Mazzocchi.

After Kindersley’s Cash Arntsen made it 3-1 Klippers on his first of the pre-season, just ahead of the midway mark of the second though, the Stars quickly broke through with a pair of their own.

Ewart’s first of the game also came off a snipe from the high slot, off a cross-seem pass from Doell, to get the team back to within a single at the 13:43 mark of the middle period.

Fellow blue liner, Jordan Grill then knotted the score on his first of the exhibition season, wiring home a tally of his own from just inside the tops of the circles, to make it a new game with just over five minutes to go in the second.

Following a scoreless third period despite some good chances at either end, the game was off to overtime, where – just 30 seconds in – Ewart officially iced the victory cake with his second of the night to send the fans home happy.

Between the pipes, goalie Josh Kotai stopped 34 of 37 shots against for the Battlefords to earn the win.

With the victory, the North Stars improve to 3-0 midway through the pre-season, with a chance to continue their roll Wednesday night in Kindersley.

The second game of the Stars-Klippers’ back-to-back will be played at the West Central Events Centre, with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday’s game will not be available on the radio. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcasts will begin with the start of the regular season.
