Charges laid; list of injured increases in Sask stabbing spree

Sep 5, 2022 | 1:27 PM

Arrest warrants have been issued for the two men suspected of killing 10 people and injuring many more in northeast Saskatchewan.

Police updated the total number of injured victims from 15 to 18 on Monday afternoon. The death toll remains at 10. Family and friends of those who are gone have been posting about their loss on social media, but police said official details about the victims are expected later today.

The incidents began early Sunday morning on the James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN), 58 kilometres east of Prince Albert when RCMP received a report of a stabbing around 5:40 a.m. In the minutes that followed, they received many more reports. Police confirmed a total of 13 crime scenes between JSCN and the community of Weldon. They believe some of the attacks were targeted and some were random.

Myles Sanderson has now been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of break and enter. Damien Sanderson is charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of break and enter. RCMP said more charges are likely as the investigation continues.

In a press release, police said every available resource is being used to locate the two suspects.

“To the people of Saskatchewan and beyond – please be assured that we are using every human, investigational and technological resource we have available to locate and arrest the persons responsible for this tragedy and to ensure your safety,” said Saskatchewan RCMP Commander Officer A/Commr. Rhonda Blackmore. “Hundreds of Saskatchewan RCMP staff are dedicated to this investigation – this includes operators taking 911 calls and tips, to frontline officers patrolling our streets to the on-scene specialized forensic and Major Crime Unit teams who continue to follow up on all information and evidence gathered.”

The dangerous persons alert issued Sunday for Myles and Damien Sanderson has been extended. Police from across the prairie provinces are assisting in the investigation, although the focus is in Regina where the suspects were last reported seen.

Regina Police Chief Evan Bray posted an update on Twitter Monday morning saying fresh investigators and resources had been brought in. Support is also being offered to the many affected by the tragedy on the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon where some of the deceased were found.

In Prince Albert, check stops police had set up Sunday have been taken down, but Mayor Greg Dionne said there are still extra officers on patrol.

“The focus is more in Regina area, but that doesn’t mean the suspects are there,” Dionne said. “People still have to be alert and be safe and watch and if they see something suspicious, call 9-1-1 right away.”

If new evidence identifies public safety risks, police will let the public know through Saskatchewan’s Emergency Public Alerting program and alerts will be broadcast on TV and radio, and through cell phones. They will also update our social media channels and public website.

Damien Sanderson is described as a 31-year-old male, 5 foot 7, 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Myles Sanderson is a 30-year-old male, 6 foot 1 and 240 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. They are armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

The suspects were last known to be driving a black Nissan Rogue with Saskatchewan license plate 119 MPI.
