Krista Fox meets PM Justin Trudeau on MMIW Walk

Aug 30, 2022 | 3:59 PM

North Battleford advocate Krista Fox met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa on Monday during her Cross-Canada Walk to raise awareness of the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).

As part of Krista’s Kilometres for MMIW, Fox is walking with Diane Morin, mother of Ashley Morin who disappeared in July 2018. Pam Milliken on the support crew is also assisting in the walk.

During Fox’s visit to Parliament Hill on Monday, she and Morin also participated in a ceremony and flag-raising for Residential School Survivors. The aim of the new Survivors’ Flag is to honour those impacted by the Residential School System in Canada. .

They also met briefly with Justin Trudeau.

“We ended up meeting up with him yesterday [Monday],” Fox said. “He knew who I was, and gave his condolences for my grandson. It was a really interesting day.”

Fox previously said her grandson, Michael Roy, was murdered in Saskatoon in 2020.

Fox was aware the PM would not be available for a longer talk due to his scheduling issues, but she hopes their informal chat will lead to further talks in the future.

“No matter what we think of him, whether we like him or don’t like him, all I had to do was say my name and he knew who I was,” Fox said. “Obviously, he is following along, and maybe listening to some of our questions and our concerns. Hopefully, somewhere maybe on the way back or somewhere down the road we’ll be able to actually sit down and have those tough conversations with him.”

On Tuesday, Fox marked her visit to Parliament Hill by reading aloud the names of about 100 Missing and Murdered Indigenous people.

She said there needs to be more action taken on the 231 individual “Calls for Justice” from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, to help put a stop to the tragedy facing Indigenous people.

Next, Fox and Diane Morin will head to Montreal on their journey.

The walk first started in Victoria, B.C., in February and is expected to finish on the east coast by Christmastime.

Lindsey Bishop, sister of missing Saskatoon woman, Megan Gallagher, who disappeared in September 2020, was taking part in the walk with Krista Fox at first, but has since gone ahead on her own journey with her husband Derek Bishop to raise awareness for MMIW across Canada.
