College student wins Summer Free Ride

Aug 29, 2022 | 12:17 PM

Grant McKee is starting the fall semester on quite a high note in a brand-new car.

The University of Regina student was traveling south and decided to stop in the Battlefords on his way. Attending the final day of the Summer Free Ride contest at Scott Campbell Dodge, McKee was the lucky winner of the Chevy Camaro RS that’s been on display throughout the summer.

Minutes after the win, he still couldn’t contain his excitement.

“Had a lot on my plate today, moving to college and had to swing by, and it’s kind of crazy that I’m going away with a car,” McKee said.

He had initially entered the Summer Free Ride contest months ago when the vehicle stopped by in Turtleford. Following some paperwork, McKee was driving the car straight to school.

“I don’t know what else to say,” McKee laughed. “This is awesome.”

It was a perfect ending to the contest that began back in June, with more than 90 finalists being selected for a chance to pick a key at random to unlock the prize set of car keys. Tyler Janzen, morning show host for 93.3 The Rock, said everyone became increasingly baffled when they got to 20 keys, then 30, then 40 and further on.

“We went through 86 keys, so when we got down to the last couple it was pretty nerve-racking, but a lot of fun,” he said.

The Summer Free Ride was a massive success compared to last year, with thousands of entries, significantly more finalists, and a large crowd on hand for the finale. Janzen said it’s a little sad to see it end.

“I fell in love with this car and now we have to give it away,” he said. “But I think it’s going to a good guy.”
