Aug 26, 2022 | 4:00 PM

Battlefords RCMP made two arrests related to machete possession over the past week.

Monday morning, police responded to a report of several people around 13th Avenue and 101st Street with weapons. Three suspects were located, one of whom was arrested.

“Only one subject had a weapon, which was the subject that was arrested,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said. “He had a homemade machete.”

“At 9:00 in the morning, on Monday, in a busy area, that’s not normal.”

The accused, 22-year-old Quarte Merasty, also reportedly provided a false name. He appeared in court on Aug. 23 for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of stolen property, obstruction, resisting arrest and breach of probation.

RCMP also arrested 22-year-old Nicholas Osecap of Saskatoon a few days prior, who had a large machete and ammunition in his vehicle. Osecap was wanted on multiple warrants and was witnessed in his vehicle with an open beer in his hand. His appeared in court Aug. 19 on charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with an undertaking.
