Fin Island Trail Run set to go this Saturday

Aug 24, 2022 | 1:00 PM

The Fin Island Trail Run will return to the Battlefords this Saturday.

The 14th annual event will take place Aug. 27 at Finlayson Island.

One of the organizers, Jes Kohut, said the free fun run is always a popular attraction each summer.

“We want people to come out and experience the trails of the Battlefords and what we have to offer here,” she said. “And who doesn’t want to run on an island in Saskatchewan? It’s something different to do… It gives people a chance to experience what trail-running is.”

Kohut said the event usually attracts close to 200 participants each year. So far, about 150 have registered, but many more are also expected to register right up to the run day. Registrations will not be accepted on Aug. 27.

The Fin Island Trail Run offers a variety of options for every age and skill level.

There will be a 5 km, 10 km, and long-course run (18 or 19 km) beginning at 8:30 a.m., as well as a one-kilometer children’s challenge run that starts at 8 a.m.

No dogs or strollers will be permitted on the run course for safety reasons.

People can register online now or come down to Finlayson Island in person on Aug. 26 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. to sign up and pick up their race package information.

Kohut noted a number of sponsors will be donating refreshments and treats for the run.

“We were expecting hot weather this year, so we definitely increased our hydration stations throughout the course,” she added. “When [the runners] get back to the finish line, there is going to be lots of water, snacks and everything.”

Participants will also be able to see how they performed, as Results Canada will be there on run day.

“The race will be professionally-timed with chip technology on the back of the [runners’] bib numbers,” Kohut said.

The organizing committee also includes Lynn Brightwell, Erin Kobelsky, Sandra Favel Rewerts, Karen Highton, and Kate Hildebrand.

South Truss Bridge open

Kohut reminds people the south-span truss bridge connecting the island to Battleford is open again, so people will be able to drive and park their vehicles on the island.

The north-span pedestrian truss bridge between Finlayson Island and North Battleford remains closed for repairs at this time.

Town CAO Ash Alam said the north bridge work is expected to be complete by the end of October.
