RCMP warn of text scam claiming to be escort company

RCMP say a text message scam is making the rounds in parts of the province, prompting a warning from police.

In each instance, RCMP said someone received a message claiming to be from an escort company, accusing the recipient of having used their services without paying. The sender then demands payment and offers threats if the payment is not received.

The text messages have also been accompanied by graphic images of violent scenarios involving assault and murders.

Saskatchewan RCMP is reminding you to be careful when receiving unsolicited text messages and never provide personal information or send money even if the text sounds urgent.

If you believe you have been targeted by a scammer or have lost money as a result of fraud, you’re asked to call police as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
