Town parade brings families together

Aug 13, 2022 | 12:21 PM

Whether it was the sound of children giggling with delight, the honking of the old fire trucks, or music from passing floats, anyway you look at it there was plenty of excitement in Battleford during Friday’s parade.

It’s been three years since the town last held the annual event due to COVID restrictions, so it was clear everyone was glad to be out celebrating in downtown Battleford again.

The theme of the parade this year was “Better Together.” Some people also wore their “Better Together” T-shirts in the spirit of things.

The parade had a good number of entries with colourful floats from the Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford and Lakeland Veterinary Services, to name a few.

The town as well as the City of North Battleford joined in the procession.

A group from Saulteaux First Nation also were among those who took part.

The parade was very much a family affair for everyone.

Philip McGee with his daughter Molly, 1, were getting ready for the event while relaxing by the downtown gazebo.

This was Molly’s first Battleford parade.

“It’s nice to get back out to see people again, and get out and enjoy the community spirit,” he said. “It’s nice to see the children out. I mean they are our future.”

Sylvester Fox who attended the event with family said he currently resides in Lloydminster but wanted to come back to Battleford to take in the fun.

“I like it here; it’s nice and friendly,” he said. “I’ve been here all my life pretty much, but now I live in Lloyd.”

Fox said the kids especially “are loving [the parade].”

Lisa Lavigne, also attending with family, said it’s good to back celebrating, since the Town of Battleford hasn’t held the annual parade since 2019. She said her kids were especially thrilled.

“They are so excited; they’ve never been to a parade before.”

Lavigne said her children came to see the fire trucks especially in the show. They were at the very end of the parade, so the family planned to stay for the whole event just to take that in.

“He [Baron] wanted to see the ambulance; Brant wanted to see the fire truck,” she said, with a laugh.
