Province asks for feedback on proposal to twin Hwy. 4 North

Residents are being asked to complete an online survey about what they would like to see for a proposed project to twin 5.4 km of Highway. 4, just north of North Battleford.

An online discussion on the project is also planned July 27 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and July 28 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m

The province said as a first step in the planning process, the Ministry of Highways has commissioned Stantec Consulting Ltd. to help conduct what’s known as a General Location Study for the project.

Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill who is also the Saskatchewan Minister of Highways said the project will be an exciting development to continue to improve safety and access for this roadway that sees a lot of traffic.

“We know that this is a busy highway — Hwy. 4 heading north to Hwy. 26, and as well as to Battlefords Provincial Park and further north to Glaslyn, and Meadow Lake,” he said. “In the last number of years the government has added passing lanes between North Battleford and Cochin which have helped to reduce the number of collisions, and made traffic move more efficiently on Hwy. 4.”

Cockrill added this stretch immediately north of the city continues to be a busy area, so the province wanted to study the 5.4 km span to see what twinning that stretch would possibly look like as a further improvement.

“We’re doing some consultation with local stakeholders, including the municipalities, First Nations, and different private sectors groups that use that stretch of roadway in particular,” he said. “From that we can make the determination if twinning this section is something that we’re going to make that investment in and what the design of that would look like.”

Cockrill said with the amount of new construction off of Highway 4 North, the area is expected to see more traffic in the future.

“There is increasing development in the north part of North Battleford,” he said. “Then, the new Battlefords Humane Society shelter is going up at the north end of town. We have the new RM office [RM of North Battleford] and fire hall there. It’s exciting to see the growth in our area. And obviously building infrastructure like this helps support further growth as well.”

People can participate in the online survey from now until Aug. 7 through the link available here. Anyone who wishes to attend the online discussion can do so by registering through the link provided here.
