Battlefords locals, Dalltan Gerstenhofer and Faizan Dar, are Brampton Cup champions after a memorable weekend for both them and their local boxing club.

Members of North Battleford’s Four Corner Boxing, the pair each took home a gold medal in their age group, representing Team Saskatchewan at Canada’s largest amateur boxing tournament in southern Ontario.

At 16 years of age, Gerstenhofer competed in the Junior C Division, comprised of athletes ages 15-16 in the 82 kilogram-plus division, winning a pair of matches on his way to the gold.

Opening the tournament Friday evening with a third-round technical knockout against Joshua Antwi of Scarborough, Ont.’s Scarberian Boxing Club, Gerstenhofer continued to roll Saturday, again getting the technical knockout over Georgian Libag from London, Ont.’s Platinum Training Facility to clinch the gold medal.

Dar, a 14-year-old, competed in the Junior B Division made up of ages 13-14 at the 60-63 kilogram division. Receiving a walk-over in his first bout, he advanced to the finals where he won by unanimous decision over Ivan Dementiev of Hamilton, Ont.’s Steeltown Boxing to bring home a gold medal in his age group as well.

Coach with Four Corner Boxing, Dylin Curiston, said the weekend served as a real positive in the development of both athletes and should only help them moving forward.

“The Brampton Cup saw teams from right across Canada, from B.C. to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and also had a team there from Ghana, Africa, with a couple teams from the States that came up. So it was a huge step in their development as boxers,” Curiston said.

“They’re both still relatively inexperienced with each of them having under 10 boxing matches, but walking to the ring with my boys and some of the other members of Team Sask., when Saskatchewan was on, people all watched. They all boxed exceptionally well.”

Four Corner Boxing will now take a bit of a break ahead of returning for the fall season in September. Among the tournaments of interest for the club next year will be the Canadian Golden Gloves, Canadian Nationals, and YYC Tournament in Calgary.

There will also be a couple from the local club competing for a spot at the Canada Winter Games in 2023, with qualifying tournaments to come in the new year.
