RCMP Report: Sexual assault arrest, search for suspects with bats

Battlefords RCMP arrested and charged a 21-year-old male from North Battleford with sexual assault on Monday.

A report came in the previous morning, with the incident in the city occurring early that day. Soon after the suspect was identified and arrested without incident.

“There’s still a little bit of work to do, but that investigation is largely done,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said.

The accused has since been released from custody and scheduled for court on Sept. 12.

Police also dealt with a 911 call of a robbery on the 900 block of 105th Street shortly before midnight on July 16. A 10-year-old victim was reportedly in the alley with his siblings when he was approached by two suspects, both reported to be carrying bats. He was threatened to turn over his cell phone by the suspects, one of whom raised the bat and struck the victim in the leg.

“We’re hoping that the clothing descriptors and having carried bats, that it might trigger someone’s memory,” Tremblay said.

While the pre-teen was not injured, the suspects then fled with the victim’s phone. One of the two suspects wore a white t-shirt with black pants, while the second male was wearing all dark clothing.

Other assault cases included:

A 47-year-old man was arrested on the 2300 block on 100th Street on Monday. A complaint came in around 9:00 p.m. that they had heard third-hand a woman was assaulted there. Police located a woman in her 30s with facial injuries consistent with assault. The accused was released and will appear in court for assault in August.

An incident in Sweetgrass First Nation also occurred on July 15. Police located a woman in her early 20s reporting as assault after the suspect had already fled the area. According to the report, the victim was violently pushed to the floor. Officers located and arrested 32-year-old suspect, Joey Armstrong, after midnight near Battleford.

Charged with assault and uttering threats, he appeared in courton Tuesday.

Charges are pending against a male in his 30s from an incident on July 16. Police were called to the 900 block of 102nd Street very early that morning where they found a woman in her 20s with some minor facial injuries who reported being choked. The suspect was no longer in the area, but has since been identified.

The investigation is ongoing.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of 34-year-old Edward Wuttunee of Saskatoon. On the 2100 block of 101st Street, the accused reportedly struck a woman in the face during an argument on July 16 before fleeing. His charges include assault, failing to comply with a release order and theft under $5,000.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested at a residence in Cochin on July 16. A male in his 20s sustained scratches on his face earlier that day during an assault. The accused was released and appeared in court Thursday.

A 38-year-old male was arrested on the 800 block of 112th Street on Sunday afternoon without incident. He was later released on charges of assault and breach of probation and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4. The victim also found on scene did not sustain any significant injuries and the investigation is ongoing.

Monday evening, a man reportedly broke into a home on Panton Avenue and assaulted the woman in her 30s living at the residence and damaged her phone. They were known to each other. The incident remains under investigation, as the accused has not yet been located, and charges are currently pending.
