Pride Week starts with flag raising at city hall

Jul 18, 2022 | 5:11 PM

Pride Week festivities kicked off in the Battlefords this week with a flag-raising ceremony at city hall on Monday.

The City of North Battleford officially proclaimed this as Pride Week.

Deputy Mayor Bill Ironstand said as an inclusive municipality the city wants to do what it can to support diversity, including the LGBT community.

“We’re working very hard to make sure that everyone, no matter who they are — race, religion, or sexual orientation — feels safe.”

Battlefords Pride president, Bobbisue Thompson, said she hopes the week helps let residents know more about the group that advocates for people who are LGBT.

“We want people who are members of the community that are maybe scared of coming out and that, to know that there is support, that we are here, that you are not alone,” she said.

Rainbow Crosswalks were painted in the Town of Battleford last week and in North Battleford on the weekend. Some town councillors also helped with the Battleford event.

Thompson mentioned when volunteers were painting the Rainbow Crosswalk in North Battleford a couple of passersby made negative remarks, which was concerning.

She hopes Pride Week helps to educate people to be more accepting of diversity.

The Pride Parade/Walk will take place on July 23 starting at 1 p.m., leaving from Kinsmen Park in North Battleford.
